The Early Childhood Reading Program serves approximately 15 kindergarten and first grade students who have been identified by their teachers as needing additional instructional support to attain important reading outcomes.

• The program is administered by a certified reading specialist who  provides intensive reading instruction to students on a one to one basis or in groups of no more than three children.

• The reading specialist works three hours per day, four days per week, according to the public school calendar.

• The reading specialist  collaborates with the volunteer consultant and is assisted by two volunteer tutors.  The tutors are selected from Adventures’ pool of experienced volunteers and are properly trained in the program.

• Each student’s performance is continuously monitored and evaluated to determine his or her progress.

• The reading specialist performs ongoing, comprehensive assessments of the program’s effectiveness and reports her findings to Adventures’ Board of Directors on a semi-annual basis.

• The reading specialist works with staff and volunteers involved in Adventures’ Parent Network Program to help parents develop improved home reading habits.

• The program is held in a separate classroom adjacent to Adventures’ existing homework assistance program.  Students participating in the Reading Program are “pulled out” from larger group activities for the one to one and small group reading instruction.
